EmbryoGlue®

What is EmbryoGlue®?

EmbryoGlue® acts like a glue by increasing the chance of implantation of the embryo to the uterus, and supports the development of the embryo during transfer and implantation.

It has been developed to closely resemble the environment of the uterus at the time of implantation – that is, when the embryo attaches itself to the endometrium, the lining of the uterus.

What are the benefits of EmbryoGlue®?

They key ingredients are hyaluranon (also known as hyaluroric acid) and a manufactured – and therefore safe – source of protein.

Hyaluronan is a natural substance found in all tissues in the body – and its level increases in the uterus at the time of embryo implantation. It is thought that the hyaluronan in EmbryoGlue® acts like a bridge between the embryo and the uterus, increasing the chance of them bonding.

Also, the higher concentration of hyaluronan thickens the solution to be more similar to the consistency of the fluids in the uterus. This allows better mixing of the medium and the uterine fluids and so reduces ‘drifting’ of the embryo.

Are there any risks or considerations?

EmbryoGlue® has been tested and CE marked for use as a transfer solution during IVF, and many babies have been born following its use. To date, Midland Fertility is not aware of any detrimental effects; however it is currently a relatively new product to the market.

Which patients will benefit from EmbryoGlue®?

EmbryoGlue® is beneficial to all IVF and ICSI patients and particularly to those:

  • where the woman is aged 35+ years
  • who have experienced implantation failure in any previous treatment cycles
  • who have unexplained infertility

The Cochrane Collaboration, an independent research institute, published results on the effects of increased hyaluronan during embryo transfer, which shows an increased implantation rate compared to embryo transfer without hyaluronan. And EmbryoGlue® is the only available product that is enriched with hyaluronan.

Other studies have demonstrated a significant increase in the number of livebirths for couples with a wide range of infertility diagnoses. (See below for data.)

Will the drugs or treatment be any different?

If the patient selects EmbryoGlue® for use in the embryology stages of their IVF and ICSItreatment, the embryologists will ensure it is used at the appropriate time during the preparation of the embryo/s before transfer. Otherwise, there will be no change to a patient’s treatment protocol.
