A leading Australian fertility nurse visited Midland Fertility Services (MFS) in Aldridge to learn more about the clinic’s unique role for nurses and to compare standards and procedures.

Denise Donati, nurse manager at IVF Queensland Sunshine Coast, requested the visit after reading an article by Heidi Birch, director of nursing services at MFS, about the extended role of MFS‘ fertility nurses and the resulting patient benefits.

During her visit she observed initial consultations, egg collections, embryo transfers and patient scanning sessions.

“Nurses at MFS are qualified for many procedures that only doctors carry out in other UK and Australian fertility clinics,” said Denise. “While we are familiar with scanning, consultations and giving pre-and post-procedural information, the roles of some of the nurses at MFS include egg collection, embryo transfer, intra-uterine insemination and surgical sperm recovery.

“My visit confirmed that IVF Queensland offers the highest standards of fertility care, but that there may be scope to broaden the role of our nurses in the future. As part of this process I will present Heidi Birch’s competencies for inducting nurses into an extended role to the nursing section of the Fertility Society of Australia.”

“MFS is proud of the very high patient care and clinical standards at our Aldridge and Wolverhampton clinics and we are happy to share this with our colleagues around the world,” said Heidi Birch.

“Extending the nurse’s role means that MFS offers patients greater continuity of care and also gives nurses the opportunity to further develop their careers.”
