MFS Celebrates 19 Years with ‘Baby 3,500’

Five hundred current and former patients, their families, bumps, babies and children braved wind and rain to join the party.

One couple and their daughter drove for more than four hours from West Wales to attend – ‘only an earthquake and road blocks would have stopped us being here today!’ they said.

Making her public debut was Lola June Turley, MFS’ 3,500th baby, with her parents Marina (37) and Lee (36), who live in Norton Canes, Cannock. Lola was born on 10th July 2006 after Marina and Lee tried for a family for almost eight years, including four years of fertility treatment.

After trying to conceive for two years, hospital tests revealed problems with Lee’s sperm, and that Marina and Lee would need fertility treatment to conceive. Their three cycles of treatment over four years included three egg collections, five embryo transfers, three negative pregnancy tests, the miscarriage of twins and, finally, the birth of their daughter.

“We’ve been through so much and dealt with some real lows, but having Lola means everything to us and it hasn’t put us of trying again,” said Marina. “The staff at MFS were fantastic and helped us cope with everything we went through. Without them, we may have given up sooner.

“We know that Lola is very special and being MFS’ 3,500th baby makes her even more so. It’s a wonderful milestone to be a part of.”

Dr Gillian Lockwood, medical director of MFS, celebrates the clinic’s 19th birthday with three ‘milestone babies’: (left-right) Michelle Brookes and daughter Francesca (3½ years), the 2,500th baby born after treatment at MFS; Marina Turley with daughter Lola (8 weeks), ‘Baby 3,500’ and Nina Sinclair with son Cameron (1¾ years), MFS’s ‘Baby 3,000’

At the party, Lola was photographed with two other MFS ‘milestone babies’ when she met ‘baby 2,500’ Francesca Brookes (3½ years) born in May 2003 and Cameron Sinclair (22 months) who was the 3,000th baby born after treatment at MFS at his birth in November 2004.

“Nowadays almost everyone knows someone whose baby, child or teenager was born after assisted conception,” said Dr Gillian Lockwood, medical director of MFS. “Sometimes, couples have a baby after just a single treatment cycle and others require more than one and experience heartache along the way. So we are delighted to celebrate the birth of Lola and all the 3,500+ babies who have been born after treatment at MFS over the last 19 years.”

“Every year we are amazed by the number of people who make such an effort to come to the party – it’s so appreciated by all the MFS staff. Even when the weather lets us down, our patients don’t!

“It’s wonderful to see the babies growing up and families increasing in size, as couples return for more treatment and bring their newest babies to show us.”
